We are passionate about educating children and have a variety of programs to further this effort. Providing resources, working in cooperation with local schools, and providing support for other educational initiatives, we proliferate the idea that the rights and responsibilities of citizenship can and should be taught from an early age.
Support for education has become increasingly important for our chapter. The early members studied the U.S. Constitution when women won the right to vote. We have encouraged local students to compete in essay contests, have provided rewards in the past for young female students who were learning homemaking skills, and have honored outstanding local students with awards through the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest program, as well as the General Davie Scholarship program. Beyond our local area, we give our financial support to both the DAR school and DAR-approved schools, such as Crossnore School and Children’s Home.
