Join Us!
Who are DAR members? We are a lot like you. We are vibrant, active women who come from diverse backgrounds and have a variety of interests. Our common bond is our lineal descent from the Patriots of the American Revolutionary War. We enjoy being together, and we celebrate our common bond of a love for our country, a desire to preserve the memories of the Patriots of the American Revolutionary War, and a commitment to make a valuable contribution to Durham and surrounding areas of North Carolina.
Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible for membership. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage, and death of each generation linking her to her Patriot, as well as documentation of American Revolutionary War service of her Patriot ancestor.
The General Davie Chapter, NSDAR, welcomes prospective members to our chapter meetings anytime. Attending meetings is a great way to meet our members, find out more about our chapter, and enjoy an interesting program. If you think you might like to attend a meeting of our chapter, please use the Contact Us link to send an email to our chapter registrar.
Steps to Becoming A Member
1
Find Your Lineage
Do you have a mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, or first cousin in the DAR? If so, please proceed to Step 3.
If no known relative was in the DAR, your first step toward membership requires establishing your lineage.
Joining the DAR does not require an interest in genealogy, but it helps to have knowledge of your ancestry. To determine your eligibility, you will need to gather documents for yourself, your parents, grandparents, and possibly
great-grandparents.
Need help with your research? Fill out a Pedigree Chart (PDF) as completely as you can and bring it with you when you meet with our chapter representative. DAR volunteers are willing to provide guidance and assistance with your first step into the world of genealogy.
2
Identify Your Patriot Ancestor
Once you have followed your lineage, you can begin to identify potential Patriots.
Did you know DAR accepts proven lineage to those who served in many different capacities, including patriotic and civil service, not just Patriots on the battlefield or at sea? Was your ancestor a town clerk, selectman, constable, or surveyor of highways? Did he sign an Oath of Allegiance or pay taxes to support the cause?
To assist in your research, the NSDAR Ancestor Search database lists ancestors on whom members of the National Society have joined. This listing is continually updated as new membership applications and supplemental applications are approved.
3
Complete the Application Process
WE’RE HERE TO HELP! Our members are here for you and will guide you through the application process.
We will be happy to help you search for your Patriot ancestor and help you with the forms and documentation you need. Contact the registrar and she will help you get started on the path to membership.
